H-TEC SYSTEMS and Groupe E advance H2 production with hydropower in Switzerland

H-TEC SYSTEMS is realizing the first H2 project in western Switzerland with Groupe E. For this purpose, two H-TEC SYSTEMS ME450/1400 PEM electrolyzers are placed on the dam wall of ships to generate green hydrogen. From 2023, around 300 tons of green hydrogen are to be produced annually with the help of hydropower, which will then be used primarily for the decarbonization of heavy traffic.

First H2 production plant in western Switzerland

The production facility at the Schiffenen dam is located in the canton of Friborg and is the first facility of this type in western Switzerland. The two PEM electrolyzers are supplied with more than two megawatts of green energy by a dotation turbine in the dam. With regard to the delivery of H2 to nearby filling stations, the location of the production plant near the A12 and A1 motorways is ideal. With the help of tank trucks, the H2 is transported by road to the filling stations.

The energy supplier Groupe E is starting a pilot project with the PEM electrolyzers and is pleased to have found an experienced partner in H-TEC SYSTEMS. “We are breaking new ground with this project. Both the constructive, open and transparent communication with H-TEC SYSTEMS and their experience with their own efficient PEM electrolyzer allow us to look to the upcoming implementation phase with confidence," explains Urs Kröpfli, project manager at Groupe E.
