AFRICA  

Consortium to develop $34-B H2 project in Mauritania  

Conjuncta has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Infinity and Masdar to build a $34-B green H2 complex in Nouakchott, Mauritania. The project’s first phase, which is scheduled to be completed in 2028, includes 400 MW of electrolyzer capacity. Once fully completed, the complex is expected to contain 10 GW of electrolyzer capacity to produce 8 MMtpy of green H2.

Fortescue Metals to increase green ammonia/fertilizer production in Kenya  

Fortescue Metals plans to develop a 300-MW green ammonia and fertilizer complex in Naivasha, Kenya. Once operational, the facility will increase domestic supplies of fertilizers and provide green H2 to the nation’s electric grid.

ASIA-PACIFIC 

Thailand looks to consortium to reach decarbonization goals

In March, Electricity Generation Authority of Thailand (EGAT), Chiyoda, MOL and Mitsubishi Thailand signed an MoU to study different clean H2/ammonia supply chains in efforts to reach Thailand’s decarbonization targets. According to the agreement, the companies plan to find pathways to develop Thailand’s domestic supply chains for the production, storage, transport and utilization of clean H2/ammonia.

Japanese titans to develop multibillion-dollar H2 plant in Australia 

Four of Japan’s largest companies—Iwatani Corp., J-Power, Kawasaki Heavy Industries and Sumitomo Corp.—are developing a H2 liquefaction and shipping facility in Hastings, Victoria, Australia. The plant, which will capture carbon dioxide (CO2) and store it Bass Strait, extracts H2 from coal. The extracted H2 is liquefied and shipped to Japan to help the island nation meet its 2050 net-zero targets. Once operational in the late 2020s, the facility will produce 40,000 tpy of carbon-neutral H2, ramping up to 225,000 tpy at full operation.  

CANADA 

Technip Energies wins contract for Hy2gen green ammonia plant  

Hy2gen has awarded Technip Energies a pre-front-end engineering design (FEED) for a 220,000-tpy green ammonia project in Quebec. Technip Energies’ scope includes assessing the potential process configuration and technologies for the plant, along with capital requirements and site operating costs.  

The plant will use hydropower to power both H2 production and air separation for nitrogen. If built, the plant will provide green ammonia to offtakers in the region.

EUROPE

Ørsted to develop eMethanol plant in Sweden 

Ørsted plans to combine green H2 and CO2 to produce eMethanol. The FlagshipONE project—located in Örnsköldsvik, Sweden—will use renewable energy to produce green H2, which will be combined with CO2 from a nearby combined heat and power station. Once operational in 2025, the plant will produce 50,000 tpy of eMethanol which will be used as a fuel to decarbonize the marine industry.

bp advances Aberdeen H2 hub 

bp has partnered with the Aberdeen city council—the JV is called bp Aberdeen Hydrogen Energy—to advance an integrated green H2 and refueling hub in Aberdeen, Scotland. Phase 1 of the project envisions the production of 800 kg/d of green H2 produced from local solar farms. The green H2 will fuel buses in the area. Phase 1 is scheduled to be completed by Q2 2024. The JV plans to scale up production to provide green H2 to other industries such as rail, heavy-duty trucks and marine vessels.  

The Netherlands has set its sights on offshore H2 production  

To provide green H2 for the country’s power grid, the Netherlands plans to build a 500-MW offshore H2 project in the North Sea.  

Plug Power and ACCIONA Energia progress the Valle H2V Navarra project in Spain 

Currently in the development phase, Plug Power and ACCIONA Energia are collaborating to build a H2 production plant (currently in the development phase) in Sangüesa, Spain. The project—known as the Valle H2V Navarra project and located adjacent to the Sangüesa biomass plant—consists of a 25-MW electrolyzer powered by local wind and solar farms. Once operational, the facility will produce nearly 3,900 tpy of green H2 for use in local industrial and transportation sectors.

Equinor awards technology licensing contract for the H2H Saltend complex 

In March, Equinor awarded Johnson Matthey a contract to supply its low-carbon H2 (LCH) technology to the H2H Saltend project. LCH technology enables operators to produce H2 with 95% less emissions.  

The project is being developed at the Saltend Chemicals Park on the central east coast of the UK. Once operational in 2027, the H2H Saltend facility will produce 600 MW of low-carbon H2. The H2 produced will replace natural gas in several industrial facilities and will be blended into natural gas used at Equinor and SSE Thermal’s Saltend power station.  

The facility will also include carbon capture to capture approximately 890,000 tpy of CO2.

Stadtwerke Kiel invests to convert plant to green H2 

To help Germany reach its stringent net-zero goals, Stadtwerke Kiel will convert its 192-MW combined-heat-and-power plant to run on 100% green H2 by 2035. To achieve this goal, the company has signed an MoU with the plant’s engine provider Innio to convert existing gas-fired powered engines to run on green H2.

Denmark and Germany to collaborate on a H2 pipeline

Denmark and Germany have announced plans to build a H2 pipeline between the two countries. To be operational by 2028, the pipeline will help both countries reach H2 production and usage targets. Excess H2 will be exported to neighboring countries.

CENTRAL/SOUTH AMERICA

Unigel to expand green H2/ammonia facility in Brazil

Unigel plans to expand the capacity of its large-scale green H2/ammonia project in Brazil. thyssenkrupp Nucera has signed an MoU with Unigel to supply electrolyzers for the project. Phase 1 of the project includes the installation of electrolyzers to produce 60 MW of power. Once completed this year, the facility will be able to produce 10,000 tpy of green H2 and 60,000 tpy of green ammonia. Unigel, one of Brazil’s largest chemical producers, will sell the green H2 to the refining and steel-making industries, with the green ammonia to be used in the company’s fertilizers and acrylics value chains.

U.S.  

HIF and Siemens Energy collaborate on large-scale eFuels facility 

HIF Global is investing in a new eFuels facility in Matagorda County, Texas. The 1.8-GW plant will utilize Siemens Energy’s electrolyzer technology to produce 300,000 tpy of green H2. At the time of this publication, the project was in the FEED stage, with startup scheduled for 2027. The facility will combine green H2 with CO2 to produce carbon-neutral eFuels.  

Chart and ZEV Stations partner to build H2 fueling network in the U.S. 

Chart and ZEV Stations have signed an MoU to build a series of H2 fueling stations in the U.S. The fast-fuel (8 kg/min) stations will service the nation’s heavy transport industry. Under the agreement, Chart will supply liquid H2 fuel station equipment and H2 liquefaction to support ZEV Stations’ multimodal H2 stations.  

Gevo signs H2 development services agreement for South Dakota H2 project

Gevo has signed a H2 service agreement with Zero6 Energy to build a 20-MW H2 production plant in Lake Preston, South Dakota. The Dakota Renewable Hydrogen project is part of Gevo’s plan to develop net-zero emissions fuels and chemical products.  

The facility will use Cummins’ proton exchange membrane electrolyzers to produce H2. Approximately 80% of the produced H2 will be piped to Gevo’s NZ1 plant to decarbonize fuel production.

Yara and Enbridge to build nearly $3-B blue ammonia production facility in Texas

Yara and Enbridge announced plans to invest $2.9 B in a low-carbon blue ammonia facility near Corpus Christi, Texas. If greenlighted, the 1.2-MMtpy–1.4-MMtpy plant will begin operations in 2027/2028. Yara will purchase the plant’s ammonia product for use in its industrial operations and as a fuel for the marine industry.
