NTPC to consider H2 blending with natural gas in city gas distribution

NTPC Ltd. has invited Global EOI (expression of interest) for a pilot project on blending hydrogen with natural gas in city gas distribution network in India under the Ministry of Power.

This EOI has been issued following the recent tenders floated by NTPC REL for Green Hydrogen Fueling Station at Leh and by NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Ltd. for purchase of fuel cell buses. A dedicated 1.25 MW solar plant is also being set up by NTPC REL at Leh which will provide power for the hydrogen fueling station.

The pilot project on blending hydrogen with natural gas will be the first of its kind in India and will provide viable alternatives to reduce carbon in India's natural gas grid. With the ambition to turn India into a hydrogen economy, NTPC will later scale it up on a commercial scale across the country. The successful execution of the pilot project will also help in reducing carbon and meeting the import substitution targets under the government's 'Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan'.

NTPC Ltd. is also working on producing green ammonia to reduce carbon in the fertilizer industry and probably also on utilization of special percentage of green hydrogen in fertilizer & refinery sector as per the upcoming mandate of the government. Also, a detailed study on green methanol production at Ramagundam has been completed and the company is expected to take a final investment decision soon.
